What is Sheet Metal Fabrication?

Sheet metal fabrication encompasses a number of operations that transform a flat sheet of metal into a 3D part or add critical part features, such as cutouts or bends. Our computer numerical control (CNC) equipment is the best choice to achieve today’s tight tolerances and timelines. Instructions are programmed into the machines for superior efficiency and precision, with a lower risk of human error. Common operations include:

  • Punching. Predetermined shapes or holes can be removed with special cutting tools in a press. Punching is highly repeatable and leaves clean edges around cutouts.
  • Laser cutting. High-powered laser beam cutters are programmed with precise instructions that guide them in cutting out shapes without distorting materials or rough edges.
  • Forming. This includes bending and shaping sheet metal at specific angles or curves to create panels, brackets, channels, and other profiles.
  • Welding. Manual or robotic TIG, MIG, and spot welding are often used in assembling sheet metal components.

Advantages of Sheet Metal Fabrication

Advantages of Sheet Metal Fabrication

Sheet metal fabrication offers many important benefits, including:

  • Material Selection. A variety of types of metal sheets and strips are suitable for fabrication, such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, bronze, brass, and many specialty and high-performance alloys.
  • Wide Range of Thicknesses. Fabrication machines like press brakes, punch dies, laser cutters, and others can be used with metal sheets from 0.006 in. to 0.25 in.
  • Finishing Options. Depending on the application, sheet metal components can be left unfinished or a finishing process can be used to add durability, strength, texture, or other features. Common options are polishing, plating, painting, powder coating, silkscreening, and heat treatment.
  • Durability. Sheet metal components can be designed with reinforcing features like darts, finished with coatings that resist weathering and corrosion, or designed with optimal thicknesses and alloy composition to maximize their useful lives.
  • Scalability and Turnaround. Computerized metal fabrication is highly efficient and repeatable, which makes it possible to produce single pieces or large batches of pieces with equal quality and quick turnaround.
